V roku 1997 bola v Los Angeles založená Visual Effects Society (VES), ktorá združuje profesionálov pracujúcich na rôznych pozíciách pri výrobe vizuálnych efektov a to nie len vo filmoch, ale aj v televízii, reklamách, videoklipoch, či počítačových hrách. Dnes má viac ako 3400 členov v 30 krajinách sveta a je to jediná organizácia svojho druhu.
Na desiate výročie svojho vzniku uverejnila zoznam 50 filmov, ktoré najviac ovplyvnili tvorbu vizuálnych efektov. V týchto dňoch, v rámci osláv 20 výročia, vydala nový, rozšírený zoznam, v ktorom doplnili okrem nových titulov uvedených do kín po roku 2007 aj viacero starších. Zoznam podľa VES prináša filmy, ktoré mali zásadný vplyv nie len na to, ako sa dnes vizuálne efekty robia, ale aj na ich vnímanie verejnosťou. Dominuje, očakávateľne, sci-fi žáner.
The VES 70 je teda dobrou príležitosťou nahliadnuť do vývoja dnes veľmi dôležitej zložky väčšiny filmov a pripomenúť si tie zabudnuté diela, či objaviť nové.
